chipguy -

Unfortunately your claim about Opteron looking really, really good seems at odds with the fact that AMD hasn't snagged any first or second tier OEM as customers for their chip. What's up with that?

The question seems to be, if all the tier1 oems have looked at Opteron and nobody has said "yes", is that the same thing as them saying "no"?

chipguy, Athlon didn't initially snag any tier-1 OEMs in the consumer space either, but anyone who tries to represent Athlon as anything but a resounding success for AMD(albeit with a few snags along the way), is just being dishonest. I'm confident Opteron and A64 will do the same; maybe along a different, more unorthodox path than Intel takes, but that's alright. They've already had some prestigious wins which, granted, are not volume situations, but AMD can take a different path to success in the server/workstation/etc. market than Intel and others and be very successful. Unconventional warfare, if you please. ;)

Who would you name as an example of a second tier server OEM?

Anyone from this list?:
