Israel may sell technologically advanced attack drones to the German military, the German weekly Der Spiegel reported Sunday.

According to the magazine, the German defense ministry proposed the purchase several months ago, and German representatives have already held two meetings with IDF officials to discuss the matter.

In February, German Defense Minister Thomas de Maiziere suggested that his country integrate attack drones within its air force. De Maiziere claimed that the lack of active combat drones in the German military could prove a major drawback in the future.

Over the past couple of years, vehement debate has erupted within German society over the ethical and moral implications of using unmaned drones in actual combat. So far, Germany has only deployed drones for surveillance or reconnaissance missions.

Germany has in the past expressed interest in developing drone technology along with France, in order to avoid dependency on American or Israeli technology.
