nice Diabetes Article!!>>1_in_8_Americans_has_type 2_diabetes and the arrival of coronavirus: In health news today
One in eight Americans has type 2 diabetes, according to a new poll – and more than one in three has a family member who's been diagnosed with the disease or has been diagnosed themselves. That's according to HealthDay, which also noted that only 21 percent of those polled reported knowing much about the disease, meaning that folks among the remaining 79 percent may have diabetes but not know it.

The National Center for Health Statistics reported Tuesday that more than 38,300 people died of drug overdoses in 2010, which marked an increase from the previous year. The Los Angeles Times says that's the 11th consecutive year during which the number of fatal overdoses has increased, and that in 2010, the majority of overdoses involved prescription drugs like Oxycontin and Percocet.

Know anybody who seems to have a cold every few weeks or so? U.S. News & World Report says a new study indicates chromosomes could partly explain why some people seem to be immune to the common cold while others seem particularly vulnerable. Researchers found that when otherwise healthy young adults had immune systems in which the cells had relatively short telomeres, they were more prone to catching a cold.

Speaking of which: People who are currently fighting a cold or getting over one should tone down their workouts or skip them altogether. HealthDay says the same goes for people recovering from the flu: Easy does it during that immediate post-sickness phase.

The Obama Administration announced Tuesday that it will operate 26 of 50 state health insurance marketplaces, which are mandated under the Affordable Care Act. Reuters reports that states had the option of choosing to run their own or letting the federal government do it on the state's behalf. Twenty-four states chose the former, and federal health officials noted that states in which the feds are operating the marketplace can still apply to make the insurance exchanges state-run down the road.

People who never completed high school are more likely to drink alcohol, use tobacco and partake in illegal drugs, according to a new government report, strengthening the link between poor academic performance and substance abuse. HealthDay says high school seniors who dropped out were twice as likely to smoke, and that 31 percent of people who dropped out used drugs, compared to 18 percent of their counterparts who got their diplomas.

Patients with multiple conditions are more likely to make an unexpected visit to the hospital, according to new research appearing in the Canadian Medical Association Journal – and mental health issues and economic hardship make that even more likely.

If the caffeine hasn't already made your ears perk up, this might: A new study of nearly 500,000 older adults appearing in the Journal of Caffeine Research suggested that as coffee-drinking increased, the risk of death decreased. Bottoms up.

And finally: A new SARS-like virus has killed its sixth victim, U.K. health officials reported on Tuesday. NPR reports that it's the 12th known case of a new kind of coronavirus, which first appeared in 2012 in the Middle East and killed five people in Jordan and Saudi Arabia. It's the first reported death from the virus in the U.K.

>>Using insulin to treat type 2 diabetes could lead to weight gain, according to a new study from Tulane University.

The study showed that aggressive treatment to regulate blood sugar levels and bring A1c levels down, especially through the use of insulin, could cause weight gain.

The study, led by Dr. Vivian Fonseca of Tulane's Health Sciences Center, appeared in a February issue of Diabetes Care.

It followed 8,929 type 2 patients, approximately half who participated in standard treatment while the other half used more aggressive treatment options, including insulin.

Those who used more aggressive treatment options gained about 2.7 kilograms more, on average, than their average treatment counterparts.

"Following randomization, the intensive group participants with the greatest reduction in A1c gained the most weight," the authors write. "Insulin and TZD (thiazolidinedione) use was associated with the greatest weight gain. Nevertheless, appreciation of these characteristics may help develop strategies to prevent weight gain when initiating intensive glycemic control in the future."

The study was conducted over the course of two years.

Although the news might be disheartening for type 2s, since weight management can help control the symptoms of diabetes, there are steps they can take to prevent weight gain.

According to the Mayo Clinic, counting calories, eating regular meals, getting up off the couch to exercise, and talking with your doctor about other medication options are the most effective ways to keep both weight and glucose levels in check.

Sources suggested that millions of people lie in the category of being at a risk of suffering from type-2 diabetes. These people are usually unaware about the same.

Type-2 diabetes is a condition in which the process of development of the insulin by the pancreas continues. Insulin is a hormone in the body that maintains the level of blood sugar. However, the continuation of the production of insulin turns the body resistant to it.

The type-2 diabetes can be spotted in a person of any age. It is commonly seen that the increasing rates of obesity are also adding up to the increased amount of the disease.

Dr. Jill Volibrecht, who is an endocrinologist at the Munson Medical Center, said the disease is much more common in the people who are obese. However, nothing can be described fully in the medical terms, so there are also some patients who are thin and are still suffering from the disease.

He said getting examined for the disease is a simpler step that includes a finger prick or can also be examined by online assessments. He said the identification of the disease should not be considered as a death sentence; instead it should be taken as a call for the people for re-evaluating their lifestyles.

He said that untreated diabetes can result in other bad effects such as eye damage, lack of sensation in hands and feet, nerve damage, kidney damage, etc. The major symptoms of the disease includes being thirsty, urinating frequently, blurred vision, weight loss and fatigue.

NFL johnson is sensitive to the_cause_of_diabetes

Johnson comes from the top program in the nation with a culture of winning and stout defense. He has no off-field issues to note.

Johnson ran into tragedy when his 49-year-old mother, Maime, passed away from complications of diabetes. The entire team went to the funeral three hours away, showing the kind of respect and care his fellow players have for him.
