The first several days of the war the troops were showing up at populated areas and expecting an outpouring of deserters from Saddams Army and to be welcomed as liberators by the civilians and meet wimpy resistance if any resistance. At every city they found more resistance than they hoped and then moved on saying this city is not strategically important let's get to Bagdad and get Saddam. Sounded fine until they did that at virtually every city except Um Qsar. The administration did not have a clue what was really going in Iraq and the troops are unprepared to meet resistance anywhere but Baghdad because of the administrations being out to lunch. Seems to me Fisk could be describing the lack of a decent plan with a lot harsher words than "got stuck". What idiots make a military plan based largely on the assumption that the opposing army will give up??

In the first attack on Baghdad we were told Saddam was probably hit and seriously wounded. When the first tape came out at first the pentagon was saying it might not be Saddam it was on Yahoo news the AP wire and many other places. A few days later they finally said it was him.
