It's hard to pick up the cross and take your lashes from a hostile world that doesn't care if you live or die. Yet life is meaningless unless you are willing to die for something more than yourself. As St. Francis' prayer says, it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
