#1040 RE: Elmer Phud #1037

EP, Madison, "Mad & son" is vapour. I don't beleive in it. At least Opteron has some leaked benchmarks and some preannounced products from several medium-sized companies.

Give me at least one Madison server announcement from anyone other than Intel? At least one unoffiacial or official benchmark? The original Itanium was delayed by 3 years, why Madison will come in time?

And what else should I know about Xeon? It is an old, shared bus architecture, designed for 1 or 2-way servers. The 4-way and 8-way Xeon is a hack, it is stressing this old architecture to what it was not intended to do. Of course results are poor and will be poor.

Check this out:

IBM eServer xSeries 440 Model 8687-38X, 16-way SMP, Intel Xeon MP 2.0 GHz 1090
hp ProLiant DL740, 8-way SMP, Xeon MP 2.0 GHz, 2 MB L3 cache 715
hp ProLiant, Model BL40p, 4-way SMP, Intel Xeon MP, 2.0 GHz, 2 MB L3 cache 480
4-way Opteron 1.6 Ghz is roumored to have the score 600

So, in 2-tier SAP SD benchmark you get 49% performance gain by going from 4-way to 8-way and 52% from 8-way to 16-way. I guess the price tag is increasing 200% each time. Pay attention the cache is 2 Mb, that's a server MP chip. Where is the scaling?
