Don't be absurd, Elmer; you know very well the difference between availability of a CPU and availability of an OEM system based on said CPU. Besides, this is Tom's talking - not exactly the most accurate source when it comes to this sort of prediction. I doubt they have a clue about who's going to produce what when, just that if the OEM were to start from square one with the intro, they'd have to take until Christmas to get a product out. I find it a lot more likely that there will be systems available immediately, there's been plenty of both prep time and interest.

Elmer, on release timing -

As soon as AMD said that the Athlon64 would be released in September, my first thought was that they are aiming to have the channels full for the Christmas selling season. September is too late for 'back to school'.

There have been rare occasions when AMD had product already on the shelves for announcment date (the 1GHz Athlon comes to mind), but usually it means that they are shipping product in volume and availability is limited as manufacturers assemble product. This is generally the case with Intel, also. There are a few places selling Centrino machines now, but pricewatch only lists 4 models (2 by Acer, one by Toshiba, one by Sony) and two vendors selling the chips separately. It has been at least a week since announcement, most manufacturers are announcing future models at this point.

The other thing about Tom's statement: AMD has been saying for months that they are shipping in September. Why does Tom now find out that they are shipping in September, and speculating that there won't be machines till Christmas? What has changed?
