". . . boot holster. . . ." brings another reminiscence. Maybe some of you know the [former, at least] reputation of Phenix City, Alabama. It's just across the Chattahoochie River from Columbus, Georgia, and Fort Benning and was known as one of the compost heaps of the United States. I was in a scroungy bar there with some other soldiers in the '40s and exchanged a couple of pleasant, non-provocative words with a young woman. Some immense local guy took offense and was ready to dismember me. His posse moved forward to join in. One of my buddies did, in fact, reach into his half boot and pull out a pistol, allowing us to back out and flee back to the post. With dignity befitting the U.S. armed forces, of course.
