1) MS is not exactly stable. Are all generations breeding true? Is it a viable product?
2) ZNF isn't working. Dead silence on ZNF since the 5,000 insertions in April. No Gen 2?
3) MS is stable but isn't worth the risk. It's a new product. Decision makers in business don't like unknowns. Think of the emergence of the PC. The old saw 'Nobody ever got fired for buying IBM' really applied. Businesses trusted IBM and the PC did not take off until IBM marketed it. Who is KBLB?
4) MS is stable and only after Kim awaits exhaustive testing and approval by his most exacting market niches: medical and military, can he come to a demand that justifies a merger/acquisition of production. Demand THEN production. It's not likely that KBPB would go to market with a sock manufacturer while the Pentagon or Johnson & Johnson is mulling over some exclusive use contract.
5) In the meantime, some other biogen process or synthetic fiber makes the whole point of this message board mute.

I do believe that we have been told many times that #1 is not an issue.
#2 has not been dead silence but we last heard that there was a change needed in the ZFN form SIAL. I have personally been told we would hear commercialization updates before any others.
#3 is possible when coupled with the idea of gen 2 making MS obsolete But that would just lead to a first option on new product clause or exclusive distributorship.IMO
#4 is where we are sitting
#5 Could happen. but so could nukes from north Korea I am not building a bomb shelter yet

ALL IMO Good post though

Hi Amateur1,
Welcome aboard!

re: 2) ZNF isn't working. Dead silence on ZNF since the 5,000 insertions in April. No Gen 2?

es1 covered most of the possibilities well, but I just wanted to add a few words about this one.

That ZNF is working is not in question.
It has been proven to work well in every organism from rats to humans, and yes, also specifically in silkworms.
The creation of the Platform Worms was a further proof that it works in the exact context of KBLB's research.
It is a reasonable educated guess by several KBLB followers that what happened to the last sets of insertions was not a problem with the vehicle (ZFN) but with the message.

We believe that the regulatory sequences were incorrect, but regardless of the specific error, KBLB has some of the best insect geneticists in the world (Drs. Jarvis, Fraser, Lewis, and others) working for them and working on this problem.
Doubtless they will go slowly this time, as the rush to multiple massive insertions last time cost them not only embarrassment, but both time and money, but I am certain that they will solve the problem.

I am also certain that this time they will NOT announce their chickens (worms) before they are hatched.

If they were certain that they had a problem by July, then I would not expect another announcement until February at the earliest, as this time they will take the time to design the new genetic codes, double and triple check them with colleagues locally and probably also with experts at Sangamo, do the insertions, see and extensively test the resulting worms and silk, and probably breed another generation to be certain that the modifications are stable and homozygotic.
When the announcement comes, probably in the spring, it will be that Gen 2 is a Done Deal with a small but stable breeding population already in existence.
