>> The [thin/light] segment is exactly what AMD´s new offerings are for <<
Seems to be a well-kept secret in the trade and financial press. In my readings about the thin/light-notebook and UPC markets, AMD gets mentioned even less often than TMTA. Right now, it seems to be, all Centrino, all the time.
KeithDust2000, when dividing the mobile PCs into three catagories like that (vs. the two I had used), your argument makes sense. I will note that it was posted here a few days ago that TMTA is introducing a more powerful processor later this year to compete in sectors where they've been absent.
Although still very tiny, TMTA and Via did grow share last year. Combined, it went from 1% of all x86 processors sold in 2001 to 3% in 2002. Now, if portables represent, say, 30% of all x86 sales (my guess) then they now have a 10% share of portables.
2003 could be a coming out year for these two companies!
While AMD is not ignoring portables, a wise general chooses his battles carefully. AMD is the only company challenging Intel in the server and desktop spaces, it makes sense for them not to challenge in the areas where TMTA and Via shine. I do agree that SFF is getting them into designs that would otherwise be closed, at lower power than before.
