Actually going there does give you a different perspective, eh AK?
One thing I can take away from the time spent on this ticker is I can pour through the SEC reports, search the internet for days, and listen to others opinions by reading thousands of posts - but in reality that equals about 10 minutes of standing at ground zero.
Yeah, it costs some time and money to travel, but it's not much compared to a sizable investment. If it only costs 2% or 3% of your total investment to fly out someplace for a couple days, why not? It helps when the company is located someplace unique, but I'm sure even a place like Norman, OK has something other than a company worth looking at. The actual visit only takes a few minutes and if you're going on vacation someplace anyway, making a short DD stop is something to do while the wife is out shopping.
I've done this with a few companies now and a good strategy before you go is to read though the 10Q's and PR's, take the message boards with a grain of salt, but still read them to see what people's fears are - and just go. I don't expect to see the CEO and ask hard hitting questions; usually there's someone there that can answer the basic questions. Mostly, I learn the most by just looking around. Are there a lot of empty desks? Do the people there work with a sense of urgency? Are the people willing to talk? (The talking part can be tough because of insider issues, but when I explain I'm just a curious investor I don't really need to ask questions - people tend to open up and talk shop. If they don't, then I wonder.) Generally, they will want to give you an investors packet, (or give you the email address for it).
A major thing this does is introduce yourself in a very personal way. It can be stressful for a company, trying to make a go of it, to talk to investors. Too formal and you will be read the 10Q. Kind of go in low key and you end up learning a little, but afterword having the ability to call up someone you've met is priceless.
Just something to think about before investing the cost of a new car into something you have no clue about.
