It's not so much tradition as to the basics of the game. You must have missed the punch line. Drive for show and putt for dough.

It takes steady hands to make a birdie putt on the 18th hole at a Major.

Should we start allowing players to strap their putters to their arms?

Personally I think even painting the little circles on a golf ball should be outlawed.

Or in the words of Bethpage Black fans to Sergio a couple of years ago, "Hit the ball already."
