Gollem, todays Xeons (Prestonia 533) have the following improvements over the ones in late 2001 (Foster).

- Larger 512KB L2 cache (as opposed to 256KB)
- Faster 533MHz front side bus (as opposed to 400MHz)
- Dual channel DDR memory support (as opposed to Rambus)
- Higher frequencies (up to 3.06GHz as opposed to 2.0GHz)
- Hyperthreading added
- MP version comes with up to 2MB of L3 cache
- Several other micro-architectural improvements

todays Xeons are much better? What exactly is the difference between the old and new?

Mainly frequency but perhaps the newer SQL was more optimized for iHT? Just a guess though.
