For those of us who find life's meaning in precinct maps and the minutiae of election returns, this has been a moment weeks in the making [ http://www.indecisionforever.com/blog/2012/11/21/mitt-romneys-gets-his-own-47-percent ]. With Los Angeles County reporting an additional 45,326 votes for Barack Obama and 12,469 new votes for Mitt Romney, Dave Wasserman's 2012 National Popular Vote Tracker [ https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/lv?key=0AjYj9mXElO_QdHpla01oWE1jOFZRbnhJZkZpVFNKeVE&toomany=true#gid=19 ] has Romney dropping to 47.49 percent [now 47.43 percent, Obama at 50.86 percent] of the popular vote. Forcing us to round down to 47 percent [and to call it a 4-point Obama win, 51 percent to 47 percent].

You may recall Romney, ever the prescient political analyst, claiming there are 47 percent of Americans, "who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them."

And he was so right, at least on the aggregate. Of the 10 states that receive the most federal spending relative to how much they contribute in taxes, Romney was the victor in all but New Mexico and Virginia, and in the end, he got his 47 percent.

But while some people just can't let go of their farm subsidies and military bases, I still think Romney could have been a little nicer to his base.
