There's plenty of need for improved battery life and improved performance. If the only process capable of delivering to that need happens to be Intel's and devices built on Intel products are successful...Apple will notice.

Not a bad way to put it. I think you have to consider the cost of a state-of-art fab before you can assume that Intel has no chance. I don't know the cost, but you could assume well over 4 billion every 2-3 years.

Most contract manufacturing is below the need for such technology. Intel is the only company that is able to spread the cost among product lines mixes.

But as of today, Intel's offering is absent. So its hard to tell how this plays out in 2013.

It may well be that the "we have enough computing power" paradigm of the PC market has already hit the phone/tablet market, maybe in a lesser way.


That's something different than what I was arguing - which was that phones and tablets have fixed thermal envelopes, and ARM seems to be at the power wall when trying to cram quad cores into phones. Not that people aren't asking for the performance, but that the thermals won't allow the processor to scale. It gets throttled, and subsequently shown up by a single core Atom product.
