The "shield" with holes in it is a protective shield for the first day after surgery and to wear at night so you don't poke or rub you eye when sleeping and pop open the incision...because the incision is not closed by sewing the incision basically closes and heals on its own...Once the eye is completely numb, an instrument is used to make a tiny, beveled “self-sealing” incision. This self-sealing incision allows the eye to heal without stitches. It works because the eye's internal pressure holds the incision tightly closed. The self-sealing incision is less than 2.5 mm long, and is made at the edge of the clear cornea (the transparent covering of the front of the eye).

Aspects of virtual technology that are just ideas now will become reality soon. For example, technology is being developed to use the retina of the eye as a screen for images that could be transmitted directly to the brain through the optic nerve. Virtual sight would become a replacement for natural sight in those blind people whose optical hardware was intact.
