kpf, on your recollections of AMD64 beginnings

I'd be very interested in any additional tidbits you have on the historical Intel/Microsoft situation with regards to AMD64 support, and I'm sure I'm not the only one on this board with the same interest. Please add whatever you can: this recent history is the basis of the direction of x86 computing for perhaps a couple of decades. Even things that might seem inconsequential to you might explain puzzling events from someone else's point of view.
