DARBES, Itanium has also been in the market for much longer than Opteron, and INTEL already had ~90% of unit shipments in the server market and automatic and broad OEM support just because "it´s INTEL" (see Dell as a good example) and so on and so forth.
Opteron had none of these luxuries, quite the contrary as we all know today better than ever before...
