I actually did the math a while back and over the long run, subscriptions cost us money. We miss more than $29.95 in ad revenue in the average user's quarterly ad views.

Ad revenue is the big revenue stream. Subscription revenue is the smaller, but still sizable, and very reliable and predictable one.

Ad revenue isn't as large a percentage of our total revenue as it is for most dot-coms, but it's big enough that we couldn't pay the bills without it.
