well, the mormons weren't winning any popularity contests back east, i think they moved west because Joseph Smith, their founder, got hung by a lynch mob, ostensibly about polygamy or something. so after they picked up and moved to the hellhole called Utah, they kind of wanted to be left alone. but butchering non-mormon settlers wasn't really a move to endear them with the U.S. either.
