Number of shares short / average daily volume, I believe. Of course in reality it would take much higher volume or many more days to cover since not everyone (but the shorts) will just sell shares

It means the number of days of buying, on average, that would be needed to cover all the short shares. So, if days to cover is 2 and we suddenly had a short squeeze, my understanding is that you could expect about 2 strong days of buying...and rising share price.
