The argument appears it is really the wholly ridiculous claim that fermentation processes and chemical synthesis are ALWAYS and WILL ALWAYS BE inherently THAT inefficient... that natural whole systems based processes are always going to be CHEAPER.
The obvious rebuttal is... then, why do we do ever do it ?
You CAN extract many drug or other biologically interesting precursor molecules directly from plants and animals that produce them... so, why do we EVER bother with trying to create synthetic pathways to produce those things, instead ?
The answer is... doing that is VASTLY MORE efficient...
That's why our aspirin supply is not dependent on farming millions of acres of willow trees ?
In context, its still a simple argument... silkworms produce precursor molecules... AND they combine them into fiber... but, they come paired with obvious limits.
Artificial processes will require a supply of precursors... and a capacity to combine them.
The resources available to generate a supply or precursors... is rather vast. The genes that enable producing the precursor molecules can be place in MANY things... not just silk worms, or "generation one" of a fungi or a bacteria ?
That argument being made here, trying to convince you that "worms" are the only thing that will ever work to make silk... is the same as claiming that aspirin will never be synthesized...
The "synthetic milk" argument ? Have you been grocery shopping, recently ? Just unaware you can buy milk made from soybeans ?
