Hi OPC, I did not see the ESPN piece. Frankly, I thought appearance fees were legal and widespread on the PGA Tour. As far as Greenbriar, it looked awesome to me. I wouldn't mind spending time there!
As far as the money, I, like most, think it's totally out of control- not just in golf but almost all sports.I saw where some hockey players recently got 10 year, 100 million dollar contracts. You know what, good for the players, even though many are prima donnas. I blame the owners- completely out of control! A-Rod of the Yankees -$27 million per year- to do what? Cure cancer? Solve world hunger? No, play a game for a year. Doesn't seem right to me.

OPC, You say they "normally would not play a course or event like this one." Not sure what you mean? First time in 20 years Mickelson and Tiger didn't make the cut, so must be a very challenging course. The resort itself looked magnificent. What's not to like?

OPC, The reason Justice paid out is because this is a new tournament and he wants it to continue to grow. The first golf pro at the Greenbrier was Sam Snead and the current (Celebrity) pro is Tom Watson. They have hosted golf tournaments on many levels and now they are hosting a PGA event. The first year the course layout was too easy (Hence Stuarts 59!) but they have lengthened and strengthened the course every year. I have played there and I can attest that it is a challenging course and a wonderful resort.

Than being said, you are correct in that Tiger and Phil do not add new tournaments to their schedule very often and that makes their willingness to play the Greenbrier a little unusual. (Although Phil stunk up the place last year too!)

Just a West Virginian taking up for West Virginia. I know you did not mean any disrespect but some may take it that way. Great course, great resort and soon to be a great tournament if they continue to improve!!
