I wish AMD was more willing to Rip into INTC, but that sort of posturing seems to have gone out of fashion with Jerrys departure. Hopefully SUN will do a better job than AMD has in driving home to the purchasing community the advantages Opteron has over Xeon.
How do you differentiate yourself in the world of x86 servers? What lets your hardware design stand out above those from IBM or Dell or Hewlett-Packard?
Bechtolsheim: We worked with AMD to bring a higher performance version of the dual-core chip to market. So, this is actually a higher-power version, a 120-watt chip that they especially made for us. I guess they announced that they are going to also sell it to other people, but we're the only company that's going to actually ship this chip for a while into the market. This gives us one speed grade higher than what's available from anybody else.
The demonstration was anything but subtle; the commercial that preceded it was deadly.
In a professionally made commercial, an office manager discusses how, using Dell servers, he was able to achieve "good" results for his business. The ensuing action proved otherwise and was a scathing indictment of Dell machines.
At one point, the commercial had a construction worker knocking down the office manager's wall to accommodate more Dell servers. The suggestion was that Dell's machines were too big.
At another point, service workers roasted chicken over a Dell server, insinuating that Dell machines get so hot and consume so much energy. At another turn, Dell machines are used as a mountain climber's footholds, as the climber scaled an indoor practice rock climb.
