How old are you? Do you not recall Apple before the ipod when it could barely compete with all the Microsoft based generics? Apple wasn't always the giant it is today, and what makes you so sure that Ariad doesn't have the proprietary research platform which will differentiate it from all the others and allow it to continue to produce the most elegant molecules out there....it certainly looks to me that they might developed this capability.
