It was back in the 70s. I wasn't in the Navy or the merchant marine; I was a passenger. Some freighters took passengers back then; apparently now that nearly all commercial vessels are container ships, they don't do much of that anymore. But it was a lot of fun.
We went from Philadelphia down the east coast to Florida, and then on to Marseilles, Savona, Thessaloniki, Split, and Rijeka. I took a train from there to Italy.
And it all took a long time; six weeks. There were a great many delays, for many different reasons: weekends, weather, holidays, cargo not ready, and so on...
