I've been wondering that same question for years. I'm not certain but I think it has something to due with volume of interest and potential true value of the company. Combining the sum of these two considerations equals the potential speculative value of the ASK/LAST. The BID represents the highest value offered below the ASK. If I'm wrong I hope somebody corrects me. PB
