why bother with the SPARC boxes at all?

To run existing application code, i assume.

I suppose but 200 new SPARC boxes seems like a lot for
that if the Opteron boxes are running Solaris too.

BTW, I wonder why Sun doesn't have an IA32-EL equivalent
to run SPARC binaries on AMD64/Solaris. Transitive is
supplying "Rosetta" to Apple to run PowerPC binaries on
x86 Macs and reports it has a lot more deals in the works. I
wonder if SPARC-on-AMD64-under-Solaris is one of them.
