Yup. The question about his current status (staff or not) with LNET is moot.
Personally I think we should not infer non-involvement from his status as a 'consultant.'
I'd bet he's still working quite closely with them. And has only moved to consultant status this late in his career in order to branch out and try some new things. 25 years tends to earn you that privilege.
When he first came on board all of us thought "hey we stole LNET's guy from them."
The truth, it's fairly obvious now, is even more exciting than that.
