They did pr that awhile ago - switching from fee-based software to free software with advertising. It allows for more "sales" of the software (because it's free).
More software being used = more ads seen = more revenues being made = more exposure = more software being used (etc., etc.)
I call it the Google Marketing Plan - They don't charge you for their stuff, but everything has ad space on it (or tracking for the advertisers!). Hell, I even do that for a few of my websites (don't charge customer as much in exchange for ad space on website with good traffic). Works out for me just fine! I make money either way.
