While in Algiers, one of our Marines had an acute appendicitis attack. Appendix had to come out NOW - no time to call a MEDIVAC to Italy or Spain ...

We got him to the local military hospital, where we located a Dr. (educated in the US) who could speak English. He removed the guy's appendix, sat with him in recovery, and as soon as he was awake and functioning, the Dr. told me to get him out of the Hospital and back to his residence. The probability of infection was just too great, if he remained in the hospital.

That really did a lot to tell me I could not have any confidence in the local medical facilities.

I had to go one time myself ... for an X-ray. And I tried to not touch anything while there! LOL
