By my reading the interim analysis did not occur in Jan 2010, but only in August 2010.

I agree with this interpretation. When I asked this question to MDVN's IR last year, this was their interpretation as well. Here is part of the response I got from MDVN

To our knowledge, JNJ has not publicly disclosed the reason for the 7-month delay they encountered from when they hit their interim events in January 2010 to when their DMC meeting occurred in August 2010. We do not expect to encounter such a long delay. As stated in our recent earnings call, we expect the comparable period for the AFFIRM trial to be in the single-digit number of weeks.
