No, I don't believe they are in alt/renewables only for the public relations. But they will milk the public relations completely out of any such project that they undertake.
I believe they receive studies that tell them what the experts think the future looks like, say 5-10 years out, and adjust their alt/renew product mix accordingly in hopes of profit maximization.
As 4tj said, they will not be a driving force for change, but will probably be out trying to stay just ahead of the curve.
My other point was that you won't hear them promoting their fossil fuel production much or at all to the public, despite still using fossil fuels far more than alt/renewables.
