Laura Messick (nee Moffitt) died peacefully Tuesday morning, April 10, 2012, just short of her 89th birthday with family at her side.
She is survived by George Messick, her loving husband of 70 years and three daughters: Mary Skees of Houston, wife of Pat Skees; Margi Ludwig of Raleigh, wife of Cary Ludwig; and Michele Messick of Dallas. Laura is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren from Texas, North Carolina and Colorado. She was a wonderful, caring wife and mother and was loved by all who knew her.
Laura was born in Newton, Iowa on April 18, 1923, the 8th of 9 children born to Edna and Lewis Moffitt. Her siblings all preceded her in death. She met George at Newton High School and they married in 1942 before he left for service in World War II. They moved throughout the mid-west during their marriage and finally retired in Leesburg, Florida, eventually relocating to Houston to be near their daughter Mary and her family. She and George lived in Houston for the past 15 years. Laura was always very active in the Catholic Church.
She and George performed many hours of volunteer work for the church, including being Eucharistic ministers for the sick and elderly. Her interests included gardening, sewing and interior design. She and George remodeled many of their 14 homes before being transferred to their next location. Visitation will be held at Klein Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 5:00 - 8:00. Funeral services will be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Church on Friday April 13, 2012 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations in Laura's name can be made to Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org or mailed to PO Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
