If I remember right they were first made by Toyota for auto parts classification.

Common-FYI, QRs were developed by Dentsu in Japan for Toyota close to 20 years ago. They elected not to patent the invention. Their application in Japan is much more widespread. The US has a lot to do if they want to play catch up.
