That is nasty stuff.

I had one light case of malaria and my wife twice - once pretty bad. We all took the so-called preventative .. but it only worked part of the time. Locals died with malaria regularly. We literally shipped a case of "OFF" with us when we went, and had to get more while out of country on leave.

They still were plagued by polio over there, occasionally. I know there were times the hospitals didn't have any meds ... not even aspirin .... locals higher up in the chain of logistics stole them, and sold them on the black market. I was able to arrange for a donation from the US Military of several cases of aspirin and other basic medical supplies for the military hospital by my house.

It was a mess, as far as medical care. I know things are much better down there.
