I think you're missing the point.
It was an anecdote.
He could have easily used equivalent ones from the past 50 years in computing. Like when one of the inventors of the room sized computer said maybe 8 government agencies would ever want one. Or Bill Gates saying he couldn't see any software application ever needing more that 256KBytes of memory.
And so on.
The real point is that with oil being a global commodity, our national and economic security is at the mercy of global market forces.
Even if we increased domestic oil production, it would be sold at the global price, not at some made up pumped from the USA price.
And if you don't like the energy debate, wait till the western US starts running out of water. :-)
