I spent some time tonight myself on this. Sent a message to Google Finance, no response yet.

Your #1 is plausible

Your #2 is NOT plausible. It is simply not believable that if a company was in talks to be bought out that this would be signaled publicly by altering their symbol. This would in affect make the whole world insiders, makes no sense.

I'm long the stock and hoping for the best!
