The shuttle was 21 years old. I am wondering why they kept it in use for so long.

The problem with that piece from what I heard was that it was right at the front of the wing tip, one of the areas that gets some of the most heat during re-entry. With the very flammable fuel stored there as well it could have been one of the possible causes (CNN also mentioned something about excessive tire pressure as well right before they lost contact)... Sad day indeed...
