Tap water is next to being free, but how many different brands of bottled water do people elect to buy?
The end users or recipients of compressed videos are the ones who have the final say in all of this.
The majority of them couldn't care less about the different issues brought up here on these many posts just as long as they can get quality video images with practically no buffering.
The end consumer determines the level of quality that becomes the industry standard and if they want something better than what free open source delivers, they will get it.
