Kodak Seeks To End Medical Benefits For Some Retirees

Eastman Kodak Co. (EKDKQ:$0.325,0$-0.014,0-4.13%) is seeking bankruptcy-court authorization to terminate certain medical benefits for about 16,000 Medicare-eligible people who retired in the past two decades.
Specifically, Kodak (EKDKQ:$0.325,0$-0.014,0-4.13%) is asking the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan to let it terminate non-vested medical benefits for the Medicare-eligible retirees who retired on or after Oct. 1, 1991. It said it "regrettably" determined that it can no longer afford these obligations.
"The debtors believe that terminating post-1991 Medicare enhancement benefits is a logical and socially responsible step to take in rationalizing their retiree medical and survivor benefits program, because these benefits do not provide core medical coverage and are readily and economically replaceable in the open market," Kodak (EKDKQ:$0.325,0$-0.014,0-4.13%) said in court papers filed Monday.
If the bankruptcy court grants its request, Kodak (EKDKQ:$0.325,0$-0.014,0-4.13%) said its consolidated balance sheet liability for these benefits would be reduced by about $223 million.
The company said it isn't currently seeking to modify any retiree medical survivor benefits for those who retired before Oct. 1, 1991.
