My voice of reason tells me, why would these benevolent, educated, business people, suddenly, turn into scampers?

They wouldn't because they don't have anything to do with the activities over the last week or so. satelliteguy, malc stone have it correct, this has been nothing short of pumping a dead stock based on some nefarious rumour that was posted on Twitter.

This is a principle that generally recommends that, from among competing hypotheses, selecting the one that makes the fewest new assumptions usually provides the correct one, and that the simplest explanation will be the most plausible until evidence is presented to prove it false.
