Yes, mineral ions can be magnetized, shaped, altered, even colored blue, pink, purple.

And, yes, iron ions can impart meaningful information. Just ask The Rolling Stones who have sold billions of tiny iron ions imparting information.

Second, you ADMIT that an electrical charge can impart information. Anybody who uses a remote control can testify to that fact.

IF there is an electrical charge embedded in an ion with a signature in the form of digital 0's and 1's - 01000011110000011111 - that could be the calling card.
