If you are interested in further information on the subject of peak oil and losts of great infomation on the energy economy, I strongly recommend reading "The End of Oil" by Paul Roberts.

I am about 3/4 of the way through it and it is a great book on the subject.

He does a great job of explaining the energy economy in general and discusses at length, all of the available alternatives. His conclusions seems to be that gas and LNG will be the transition fuel as the world moves towards a hydrogen economy long term, with other renewable energy resources (wind, solar, bioconversion, etc.) contributing a significant percent (maybe in the range of 20%).

He also does a good job of explaining the CO2 problem, which has direct implications for future energy sources.
