Not true. Jan 6 was the record date for creditors, not equity.
The record date for equity is Feb 9 when it comes to voting on the plan, but you will likely have to vote some days before that date to satisfy your broker's need to have time to turn around and convey the vote to the solicitation agent. And as soon as your broker sees that you have voted, the broker will lock up your shares.
