Mark, you need to be more understanding.
In this Politically Correct world, brains is not necessarily the chief criterion for admission to the medical profession.
Way back when, if you were the son of a doctor or had political connections to the Med School, you got in.
For awhile, merit and potential were considered. But that all went away in the interests of political correctness.
I am to understand that in a class entry size of around 150, only about 125 slots will be based upon merit selection. Some slots are reserved for "Medical Illustrators." In this computer age where "ADAM" has been round forever and there is great teaching software in anatomy, physiology, and about everything else, they are reserving scarce slots in med schools for medical illustrators. Medical illustrators are supposedly artists who go through med school and graduate but are never supposed to practice medicine. The other slots are left for discretionary admissions.
My wife used to be a gatekeeper as a college professor. The selection committees she used to serve on agonized to make the best choices for the university, the community, the medical profession, and the patients. She doesn't do that anymore. They are different types of selection criteria and different politically correct policies. It certainly is better for her mental health, but I wonder how wonderful it is going to be for the American health care system.
