Your broker won't let that happen.

If you short value starts to get close to your account value, your broker will buy in with or without your permission.

Naked shorts are almost by definition outside the legal framework.

What happens to a hedge fund that has a huge short position that goes broke? I don't know. IF there really has been such an issue it has not been made public that I am aware of.
