So it's completely rediculous to assume that all of the "shorts" were bona fide sales, then preferred shares were converted into common stock to cover the short positions?

That makes no sense?

The 10-K will be most revealing. Outstanding share-wise and cash on hand-wise after the decimation of the share price.
