1. Gullible, ill-educated, ill-informed?

or

2. Intentionally, consciously supporting JD's scam, and receiving remuneration of some sort?

I keep leaning more and more towards the second viewpoint. This, too, is more in keeping with Ockham's razor, since it explains their behavior simply and cleanly and without having to further explain how anyone could be so stupid as to believe what they were proposing.
