Dan, maybe you can answer this simple question. With AMD's "huge lead" on Intel, why did Steve Jobs choose Intel over AMD?

Tenchu

Because he's not stupid. Seriously, he saw the roadmaps and he made his choice. In a way, not going with AMD was sort of surprising to me, with all the amd64 hype etc. great new fab, we are innovators, leaders, etc.. because that is the same hype that comes out of apple, I thought they would have gone with amd just to stick it to intel. But then I did read some amddroid high level guy say he thought eventually apple would use amd.. shrug.

i think apple went with intc *for now* because they can't afford any additional risk in this transition. it will be difficult enough to cross over to x86 without amd's financial uncertainty.

further intel has resources to mitigate the risks in transition with their tech support in hw and sw.

roadmap and balance sheet...i suspect both weigh equally.

why did Steve Jobs choose Intel over AMD?

Because if it did not go right with AMD he would get sued?

Because AMD buys its process technology from the people
whose inability to deliver is the reason Apple was looking
for a new MPU vendor in the first place.

Re: why did Steve Jobs choose Intel over AMD?

Well, if it's anything like the cluster competitions I've seen, Intel offered free chips plus free engineering support.
